You’re in a Windy Area? We can help

We have many structures in very windy locations from coast to coast. This is probably the most common comment we get from people who reach out to us. We have experience and extra steps we take to help ensure your structure doesn’t end up as an expensive kite. We have been diligent in our articles and instruction manual to help these situations, but ultimately it’s up to the customer to heed these warnings.

One of the things that is stressed in our assembly instructions is the importance of tying your frame off in both directions as soon as you have the first section of ridge installed. This is typically done with rope coming down from the ridge as an inverted “V”. The sooner this is done, the easier it is to hold everything plumb.

It is worth noting / stressing, that this is not a long term replacement for the wind braces. The wind on the collective surface of all the hoops is capable of exerting a tremendous amount of force.

When one does the math, there are actually cases where the wind pushes with more force when there is no cover on the building then with a cover!

A 20’ x 48’ x 12’ high structure with 4’ spacing has the same amount of hoop surface as an 8’ x 14’ wall. This is an example why the ropes used to hold the frame straight is not intended as a wind brace.

Once the hoops are all installed and the purlins attached, it is important to install the wind braces before proceeding. The purlins are what tie all of the hoops together and then by angling the wind braces down from the rows of purlins, you would be bracing the whole structure.

In photos on our website, you will see our smaller structures have fewer wind braces than the larger ones, which accounts for the above math mentioned. This has been developed with our experience, as well as the engineers who have assessed our structures.

There are different notes on placement, direction and location that will help your structure survive the wind as well. We do our best to go over all the scenarios with you when you’re discussing your purchase with us. The more details you can give us the better. Obviously we aren’t able to account for everything you may encounter, but it is our intention and mission to set you up for success as best as possible. We don’t want your greenhouse to end up flat or blown away anymore than you do! And this is also why we reiterate,

There’s no such thing as too many anchors!

Livestock Shelters

Pictured is a 30′ wide structure mounted on a knee wall. The short wall keeps the animals away from the plastic while also increasing the sidewall height. This particular customer has had several years of success using this sort of housing for his sheep.

Animals thrive in a greenhouse environment benefiting from being dry, out of the wind and in the light, without being in the direct sun.
There are a few options in covering to choose from. A typical kit is made from two layers of 7mil white poly and includes an inflator fan that blows air between the layers. This will reduce the condensation that the animals create. It also includes a single layer to cover each end and base brackets attach the structure to a wall.
Roll up sides are added for easy natural ventilation. Usually customers attach a snow fence or netting to the inside of the hoop if the structure is mounted to the ground, so the animals do not come in contact with the cover or run away when the sides are rolled up.
Alternately, a white tarp covering may be used instead of the double white poly, especially in situations where the animals are going in and out on their own accord when they require shelter.
TARP vs. DOUBLE PLASTIC
The big difference is that with TARP you get extremely high tear resistance with low annual cover cost, and with DOUBLE PLASTIC you get reduced temperature fluctuation & drip control while adding stiffness in high winds.
AVAILABLE OPTIONS
Custom widths, heights & hoop spacing
Roof vents & forced ventilation packages
Various types & sizes of doors with end framing priced separately
8mm polycarbonate sheeting for roof and/or ends
Roll up sides for natural ventilation & reduced condensation
Cross ties for added rigidity, support or other storage

Repairs to soft-cover buildings

A question that we receive regularly is “Do you have any repair tape to fix damage?

That is a valid question since it does not matter how careful you are, accidents happen.

The good news is that we have a high quality repair tape for both our plastic and tarp covers.

[Click for video]

The plastic repair tape is clear and comes in 2”, 4”, 6” and 10” wide with rolls that are 48’ long.

4” wide is our most popular width since it manages knicks and bigger cuts. The 4” rolls sell for $46 plus courier and tax.

It is a good thing to have on hand so that any damage can be addressed quickly.

What sets this tape apart is that the adhesive on it is UV treated. This means that, if applied correctly, should stay on for the life of the plastic.

The tarp repair tape is white and comes in rolls of 12” x 48’ at a cost of $185 plus courier and tax.

Since this tape comes with a backing, we are able to sell it by the foot as well. Most repairs require only a small piece of tape. This way you can have some without investing in a whole roll. It can easily be cut into “patches”

Repair tape should be applied on the outside of the cover and the cover MUST be dry.

During cold weather, it is also best to warm up the surrounding area.

Tape will be applied better if you have someone on the inside who can provide resistance when you are applying the tape.

Very seldom is damage in a convenient spot so it is important to remember … safety first.

With bigger cuts (4’ or bigger) you will use less tape and do a better job by using the wider tape.

For the bigger cuts, it is best to use smaller pieces of tape to bring the sides of the damaged area together, much like a doctor does with stitches in a wound.

If you have a cut that is high up on the structure, we suggest that you give us a call so that we can talk specifics on safely and effectively reaching the spot. There are too many subtle differences with structure installations to make “cross the board” suggestions here.

Another area that is an important reminder is preventive care. Many of the cuts that happen are from preventable sources.

It is important to have it on your calendar for at least 3 times per year to have a walk around the area to ensure that there is no debris around which could become cover damaging projectiles in a storm.

Another area to inspect is trees in the area for dead branches. These also can easily break off in a storm and become projectiles.

These hazards are something you would not want to hit people either.

While some cuts and damage are preventable, we have solutions for when “life happens” Call is today so you can keep some tape on hand for those times you need to fix it in a hurry!
