Installing Wire Insert on Multiple Layers of Plastic

In response to a few questions about increased difficulty of installing the wire insert on 3 layers of 7.2 mil plastic. I have done my experiment with zero added degree of difficulty.

I don’t want to leave it just like that. I would like to add a few points.

First of all, the temperature was about 18C when I did this. It will progressively get more difficult because the plastic is less pliable as the temperature gets colder.

I should follow this up with the same experiment when the temperature is below freezing.

For my experiment I put extra screws into the channel simply to increase the chances of interference between wire insert and screws.

I had one instance where it was a little more tricky and had to push a little harder.

I could see that there could be a possibility where you might need to take out the wire insert and start 1 centimeter over.

There are a few things which I wish to point out on logistics and technique. There is a critical thing to remember for the helper who is pulling on the loose plastic.

He/she must be pulling at least 30 cm ahead of where the wire is going into the channel to allow the necessary slack to get the wire into the channel.

The same applies for the person inside the structure who is pulling on the end wall cover.

Inserting the wire insert is very much a wrist action and proper technique is probably even more important when doing 3 layers of 7.2 mil

Your thumb should be on the next equal bump (either up or down) so that you can apply some twisting action to the insert.

Never simply slide the insert up and down as this can abraid the cover.

What are the considerations for growing over winter?

Heating, interior tunnels, air circulation, humidity control

When someone is intending to grow in a plastic covered greenhouse over winter, the first order of business is to put a double layer of plastic with air between.

This cushion of air acts as insulation and will reduce heat loss by about 30%. A secondary benefit from this cushion of air is that it reduces condensation in the greenhouse dramatically.

Even if you are not going to heat the greenhouse, it makes sense to put the extra layer of cover with air between since it will provide a significant extra margin for cold.

The small fan which puts the air between the layers is made to work against pressure. It can not “over fill” the cavity.

When installing the second layer of plastic, it is not pulled tight. This allows the second layer to puff up to about 10 cm which is the optimum space.

It is the dead air space that creates the insulation value. If the air is moving, you will not have optimum efficiency. This is the reason it is important to be vigilant about patching any holes in the plastic when they occur.

Especially if your intention is to grow without heating, you could benefit from installing and using small interior tunnels. These tunnels would only be covered during severe weather. Since the air volume is small, even the heat from a few light bulbs will make a difference.

Interior air circulation is even more important in the winter time than it is in summer. In the winter time when things are more likely to be closed up, the probability of stagnant air is high.

It is important to monitor the humidity level in your greenhouse as well. Getting rid of excess humidity will cost you some heat, but you are creating a healthier environment for your plants.

If you are using a forced ventilation system for either humidity or heat control in the winter, it is important to have the thermostat close to the incoming air so that things will shut down quickly if the incoming air is extremely cold.

Any heating system which is used in a greenhouse should have a stainless steel heat exchanger and burner. The standard aluminized units simply will not stand up long term in the moist environment of a greenhouse.

February Update

Ever since the onset of COVID-19 virus with all of its challenges, we at Multi Shelter Solutions have been fortunate to have a huge increase in interest in our products. We are grateful that people see such value in our greenhouses as they search for added food security amidst uncertainty.

This increase in interest during this time of uncertainty and extra protocols for safety have not happened without its own challenges. We are grateful for the patience which customers have shown and also their willingness to plan ahead.

Generally speaking we are getting people the information and numbers which they need within a week. Some of the more complex quotes or ones with a few extra situations do take a few extra days.

In the office, Maggie has been quickly acknowledging requests and identifying any missing information so that when Kelly or Norm does the quote, they have what is required.

We appreciate you giving us as much information as possible to reduce any back and forth and help your quote process go quicker. As a reminder we do not give quotes or delivery updates on our social media.

Please be aware that with the uncertainty and volatility of steel and aluminum costs, we are only guaranteeing our prices for 30 days. With our current workload, deliveries are being quoted at 10 weeks. Some of the larger or more complex buildings are being quoted as longer. Season Extension: Ventilating & Heating

To make your greenhouse more of a year round functioning entity, there are two main areas in which you have to make the structure more efficient-Heating and Ventilation.

1. Heating is your biggest expense for the winter so retaining heat is a priority.

The easiest way to retain heat in your greenhouse is to install a double poly cover with air in between. A small squirrel cage blower attached to the inside layer of plastic aids in maintaining air between layers.

The more dead air space between these layers you can create, the closer you will be to achieving a 30% reduction in heat loss. Holes will result in air movement and therefore less efficiency. 3″-5″ consistent space is ideal. It is a given that you would have less then that around the edges and over the ridge.

Double plastic will have a considerably longer life span. It is important to realize that as plastic gets older, the light transmission will be reduced which will reduce production.

Infrared plastic (IR poly) does further reduce heat loss and increase light diffusion so it can also be a consideration when looking for ways to reduce heating costs.

2. Ventilation is also one of your biggest considerations for the warmer times of the year. Ventilation can be done through forced or mechanical methods or passive through vents or roll up sides.

Vents are extremely effective since they can be placed higher up where the heat needs to be expelled. Mechanical ventilation is more costly both up front and to operate but it is easier to control since it is attached to a thermostat. For mechanical ventilation to be effective, it needs to be sized and located properly.

Roll up sides are less costly and simpler to install but are restricted by the fact that you have to be there to open and to close.

Climate control is especially challenging in the spring and the fall since most days you will have the need for both ventilating and heating.

One area that you need to be especially aware of is stagnant air. Without proper air movement, circulation and exchanging, stagnant air can cause many different types of diseases. It is important to understand what your plants require

Livestock Shelter or Greenhouse?

One of the questions we are often presented with has to do with customers wanting a structure for dual purpose. In itself, this could be considered as a wise strategy to get multiple uses for a building so that it can be used closer to year round.

The question which needs to be asked is “Are these complimentary applications?

One of these dual applications is for greenhouses and livestock shelters. There are a lot of similarities between the two with the most prominent ones being a double roof cover with air between and that they often have roll up sides.

Where the problem arises is that when you have a greenhouse, there MUST be a clear cover to allow the proper spectrum of light to come through to allow plant growth to occur. This level of light comes with heat which can easily be a problem for animals.

For a livestock shelter 90% of the battle is keeping them dry and out of the wind, cool is better then warm. If your animals will only be in the shelter during inclement weather, you will likely have more leeway in dealing with heat.

We have had customers who cover with single clear during growing season and the put an extra layer of white during the animal housing.
